Notifications - AI Summaries

AI-generated Notification Summaries can be added into Notifications generated by the Airmail2® Cloud Digital Mailroom. This feature utilizes the Microsoft Azure AI Language to generate intelligent summaries of scanned mail. It provides a productivity boost as it helps attorneys and staff instantly assess the content and priority of incoming correspondence.

Description

Azure AI Language is a cloud-based service that provides Natural Language Processing (NLP) features for understanding and analyzing text. One of the features of Azure AI Language is text summarization.

AI Language offers two methods of text summarization: Extractive summarization creates a summary by selecting key sentences from the document and preserving their original positions. In contrast, abstractive summarization generates a summary by producing new, concise, and coherent sentences or phrases that aren't directly copied from the original document.

Airmail2 uses abstractive summarization to generate its notification summary. This method produces informative results, but it does not directly copy sentences or phrases from the original document. Further, Airmail2 Digital Mailroom uses the OCR text generated during image processing as the source for AI summarization. The original document is not involved.

Example

An example of an abstractive summarization of the 12-page indictment of “Dread Pirate Roberts” appears below. The original indictment is available on our website here.

Document Summary:

The document outlines charges against Ross William Ulbricht, known by aliases like "Dread Pirate Roberts" and "Silk Road," for orchestrating an extensive narcotics trafficking conspiracy via an anonymous online marketplace called Silk Road. From about January 2011 to October 2013, Ulbricht facilitated the sale of illegal drugs and hacking tools on this platform, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. The site, which used a Bitcoin-based payment system to obscure transactions, was a hub for the distribution of significant quantities of narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, LSD, and methamphetamine. Additionally, Ulbricht is accused of engaging in a money laundering conspiracy, with intentions to promote illegal narcotics trafficking and computer hacking, resulting in a grand jury indictment for these crimes. The document highlights Ulbricht's role in managing the site, his use of communication facilities for felonious purposes, and his involvement in soliciting a murder-for-hire, all contributing to a sophisticated criminal enterprise. The charges reflect a serious breach of both narcotics and computer hacking laws, as well as money laundering statutes.

How is data processed?

  • Azure AI Language processes text data generated by Airmail2 image processing solely for the purposes of summarization.
  • All summarization results are sent back to the customer’s dedicated private tenant in the Microsoft Azure Cloud.
  • Azure AI Language does not store or process customer data outside the region where the customer is deployed.
  • Azure AI Language encrypts all content, including customer data, at rest.

How is data retained?

Data sent in synchronous or asynchronous calls may be temporarily stored by Azure AI Language for up to 48 hours only, and is purged thereafter. This data is encrypted and is only accessible to authorized on call engineers when service support is needed for debugging purposes in the event of a catastrophic failure. Once the summarization feature is enabled and tested DocSolid turns off the temporary storage of input data.

Summaries are retained by Airmail2 Cloud for 30 days, following the same retention period as documents. The summaries are stored in the customer’s private database and not intermingled with other customer’s data. Retention settings are determined by the customer with the schedule set during onboarding.
